Decent rail station for local services to Kirkby, and Southport in the west, and mainly Manchester Victoria in the east. Handy for the town centre.
Wallgate is the smaller one of Wigan's two train stations. Part of the Southport to Manchester line there are frequent services to Southport and Manchester Victoria. As well as Kirby in Merseyside. Not the most modern of stations.
Wigan Wallgate Train Station is one of two Train Stations situated in Wigan.Wallgate is not on the main line.You have to walk a short distance (100metres)across the road to Wigan North Western Station to join the main line.Wigan Wallgate has three platforms with 1 & 2 platforms being used the most.Platform 1 is the Southport and Kirkby line.Platform 2 is the Manchester line taking you to Piccadlilly or Victoria.Platform 2 can also take you direct to Leeds/Huddersfield/Blackburn.Wigan Wallgate is a Station of old and new amenities.It's over 100years old and parts of the furniture and fittings are Grade 2 listed.There is a lift and also an additional staircase taking you to and from platforms.There are toilets on the platforms.There are vending machines on platform 1.There is no cafe here.Wigan Wallgate ticket office is open till 10pm.There is a Station Supervisor on this Station and is always manned until it closes post midnight.There are Gateline Barriers in operation on this station until 00.10 hrs.
